Overview

Description

Of all the places in Alaska, few have the wealth of wildlife, scenery and history that Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park (SHP) offers. The ruins of a World War II coastal defense installation coupled with steep, surf-pounded cliffs, deep spruce forests, and wildflower-laden meadows offer you a unique opportunity to learn about the events of World War II while enjoying the natural beauty of Kodiak Island.

Geography:

The park offers Historic WWII history and remnants, scenic views overlooking ocean bays, coastal cliffs and distant mountain landscapes and approximately seven miles of trails winding through spruce forest and around Lake Gertrude.

Recreation:

Picnic shelter, volleyball court, horseshoe pit, hiking, self-guided WWII historic walking tour, wildlife and marine mammal viewing, tidepooling, beachcombing, a park exploration puzzle, bird watching, fishing, surfing, and summer naturalist programs.

Facilities:

The park facilities include; a reservable picnic pavilion area with six tables, fire ring, and charcoal grill, an outhouse, volleyball court and horseshoe pit. A small clean campground with 5 small vehicle sites and 3 walk-in sites, a self-guided historic tour of the WW II fortification remnants and bunkers, The Kodiak Military History Museum, a park exploration puzzle, approximately seven miles of hiking trails, trout fishing in Lake Gertrude, scenic overlooks along the ocean cliffsides, wildlife and bird watching, and marine mammal viewing.

Fees and Cancellation Policies
Special Policy Applicable to this Facility
Cancellations: Cancellations cannot be made within 2 calendar days prior to arrival date. Cancellations made at least 3 days prior to arrival can receive a refund (does not include transaction/cancellation fees). Cancellations must be made through www.reserveamerica.com. You must cancel your reservations online, from your account. If you fail to cancel in a timely manner, or fail to use the facility for reasons other than the exceptions listed below, a refund is not available.

Changes/Transfers: Changes/Transfers must be made 3 calendar days prior to your scheduled arrival date and incur a $4 change/transfer fee. Changes/transfers cannot be made within 2 calendar days. Changes where the reservation is extended will not have an additional change fee.

Refunds: Park Staff are not authorized to give cash refunds. Refunds for canceled reservations online will be made by issuing a credit to the card used for payment.

Exceptions: If you were unable to use the facility due to events beyond your control, such as extreme weather/hazardous conditions (as determined by Alaska State Parks), or closure of a road, trail, or facility by the State, you may request a refund. Requests for refunds must be made within three (3) business days of the last date of your reservation to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Public Information Center at 907-269-8400. Please provide your reservation number when you call. Extreme weather in the Northern Region is defined as Minus 30 F for the "Hunt Memorial", "North Fork", and "Chena River" Cabins; Minus 20 F for all other cabins and ice huts. In the event of a natural emergency or sudden campground/site closure, a full refund will be issued. The Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation reserves the right to make the final determination of whether a refund will be issued.

To reach the park from the ferry dock and downtown, go west on Center Street, and make a right onto Rezanof Drive, follow Rezanof Dr. for 3.7 miles and turn right onto Abercrombie Drive which leads to the park. If starting from the Kodiak State Airport, make a right onto Rezanof Drive, follow Rezanof for 8.5 miles and turn right onto Abercrombie Drive.
